Summer Fairs and Festivals bring NYC Street Closures

Street fair and festival in New York CityEvery year people hit the streets of New York City to sell their wares and to shop from local vendors. Festivals and fairs of all kinds cause street closures throughout the summer. This year is no exception.

Here’s a look at some of the fairs and festivals that will be disrupting traffic this summer:

DOT Walks

From June 23rd – 25th, there will be numerous fairs and festivals as part of the DOT Walks program. Some of the most notable closures will be 5th Avenue between 73rd St and 84th St for the Taste of 5th Avenue walk. The Two Bridges walk will have Rutgers closed on Saturday, and the Jungle Gym 2017 walk will close off 3rd Avenue on Sunday.

Over in the Bronx, the Bronx Summerfest will have Louis Nine Boulevard shut down between Southern Boulevard and Jennings St. Boogie in the Bronx will also affect traffic on Grand Concourse between E 162nd Street up to E 170th Street.

In Queens, the Worldwide Woodside Neighborhood Festival will also be going on.

Heritage of Pride Parade and Festival

One of the biggest events in the city this summer is the Heritage of Pride Parade and Festival. There will be numerous closures between 36th and 41st St, and between Park Avenue and 6th Avenue. The parade will flow from 5th Avenue onto 8th Street and onto Greenwich Avenue and onto Christopher Street.

Other Notable Events

In addition to all of the DOT Walks events and the Heritage Pride Parade and Festival there are a handful of other smaller events taking place around town. The Downtown Independent Democrats Liberty Street Festival will be taking place on Liberty Street as well as the NYC Police Museum Fair. On Bleeker Street is the BAMBRA Festival. Both Little Italy and Stone Street Pedestrian Malls will also be hosting fairs this summer that will affect traffic in the area.

As always, New York City is a hive of diverse activities. As you enjoy some of these summer fairs and festivals, make sure to check the NYC DOT website to keep track of street closures and consider alternative transportation options if you want to simplify your travel. Along with the street closures above there will be limited parking available at many of these events, so a shuttle or car service is recommended if you want to get the most out of your weekend festival visits. Remember, even if the event only lasts for a few hours, the city gives organizers from 8 AM to 7 PM to set up and tear down so the roads will often be closed all day.
