4 International Travel Destinations: Getting the Best Bang for your Buck

This is the second in our Summer Travel Series…

Girl in airport, looking at international travel destination arrivals & departures Looking to get out of town and explore the world, but trying to stick to your budget? The good news is that there are plenty of international destinations that you can visit with little money. Between the differences in currency rates, and the cost of living in some of these locations you may be able to travel internationally for less than you would spend on one of the large tourist towns in the US.

1. Thailand – Thailand has long been one of the most popular international destinations for travelers from the US. The biggest reason is the currency exchange rate. A few hundred American dollars can go a very long way in Thailand. In addition, the culture of Thailand is such that there is lots to do just wandering through the city without even having to buy tickets for expensive attractions or overpaying for restaurants.

2. Peru – While millions of people stream into Machu Pichu every year, the prices outside of this area are very reasonable for travelers. Peru is well connected with public transport so you can get a cheap hotel on the outskirts of town and ride a bus into town to explore. There are plenty of traditional Peruvian meals to be had and much to see.

3. Jamaica – Jamaica is a destination with tons of unique personality that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. There are thousands of hotels spread across the island, and it is well known for its public beaches. Plus, it is close enough that you can get flights at reasonable rates, which is a huge bonus!

4. Uganda – If you’re interested in the African continent, you can’t do much better than Uganda. There are tons of outdoor activities to enjoy in Uganda, as well as the infamous Lake Victoria. Many of the guided tours and other tourist activities are very affordable in this town.

The key to international travel is paying close attention to the difference in cost of living and currency exchange rates. Oftentimes if you find a hotel outside of the main city you can save a ton of money. Most of Europe and South America have very well developed public transport so you will be able to get around without paying for costly taxis. While these destinations may seem a bit off the beaten path, the truth is that they are all rich with culture and experiences that you can’t get anywhere else!
