Should I Fly Into JFK or LaGuardia This Holiday Season?

Holiday Travel - airport and airplane taxiAs the holidays draw closer it’s time to start planning your flights into and out of New York City. Unfortunately, there are some pretty negative reviews about all three of NYC’s three major airports especially at this time of year. So how do you choose between JFK and LaGuardia for your arrival?

When To Choose JFK

If you are not familiar with New York City, or you simply aren’t sure where your holiday travels will take you in the city, JFK is probably your best bet. JFK has a slightly higher on-time arrival rate than either of New York’s other airports, and they have fewer cancellations throughout the year.  If you plan on staying on the South side of town, this is where you’ll want to be. You’ll find that there are more busses and shuttles available at JFK than the other airports to get you to your final destination. Keep in mind that JFK is an incredibly busy international airport as well, so there will be very long lines at immigration and customs if you are coming from outside the US. For the most part, JFK is the preferred airport of holiday travelers simply because it offers better service and amenities.

When to Choose LaGuardia

LaGuardia is located on the north side of Manhattan, and gives you easy access to the eastern boroughs. LaGuardia offers faster access to Time’s Square than the other airports in the city, and it puts you close to Long Island City. Unfortunately, LGA has some of the worst ratings for cancellations and on time arrivals, so you can expect a little bit of extra stress with your plane ticket. If you can maintain a calm demeanor as you go through security and wait on the tarmac for a place to deplane, you’ll be okay at LGA.

New York City’s two largest airports are not very forgiving for travelers during the holidays. The best thing you can do is plan ahead and get familiar with a map of the city so you can choose the destination airport that is most accessible for you. If you’re concerned about the timing of your arrival, or you’re just on a really tight schedule, make sure that you take into account each airport’s track record for successful flights. As always, the earlier you buy your tickets the easier it will be to plan ahead for some of the difficulties of flying into NYC during the holidays.
