Passenger rights and service provider responsibilities
In recent years, there’s been growing public concern about ground transportation safety, especially in light of safety-related news stories related to the new breed of ride-sharing services such as Lyft and Uber that rely on smartphone ride-hailing apps. Many riders have been wondering: What are my rights as a passenger? And what exactly should I expect from my driver and from ground transportation companies? A recent online survey found that 91% of U.S. adults over the age of 17 believed there should be mandatory rules and regulations for ride-hailing drivers.
The public wasn’t the only group to be concerned. This issue is also a priority for the limousine industry and for its leading professional organization, the National Limousine Association. With more than 2,000 members, this nonprofilt organization has been the voice of the luxury chauffeured ground transportation industry since 1985. Members include owners and operators, suppliers, manufacturers, and regional and state limousine associations.
Safety practices for ride-hailing services
To help make ground transportation safer, in 2015 the NLA introduced the Ride Responsibly initiative. The initiative establishes best practices for prearranged car services and transportation network companies, including ride-hailing app car services. These best practices are outlined in a Passenger Bill of Rights and a Driver Duty of Care. In addition, the program focuses on educating both service providers and the public about regulations, legislation and best practices in the industry. It also provides a forum for people to voice their views and opinions about the industry.
