Residents of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey have been feeling the heat over the last few weeks as construction at LaGuardia Airport has ramped up. The current stage of construction is aimed at completing an expanded parking garage on the west side of the airport and redeveloping concourse B. While the companies managing the construction planned ahead for detours, the reality of those traffic delays has been significantly worse than anticipated.
Here’s what you need to know before you plan your next trip out of LaGuardia Airport:
Expect Delays
After a particularly bad bout of traffic in August of 2016, the city has been working to improve alternate routes to the airport. Nevertheless, officials recommend arriving two hours before your scheduled departure time for checkin. Traffic fluctuates throughout the day and the trip to LaGuardia from Citi Field can take anywhere from five minutes to forty five minutes.
limo drivers get you closer to the airport terminals
In an effort to minimize incoming traffic, taxis and limo drivers have been routed to the south side of the airport. Their detour lane actually gets you closer to the terminals and takes them out of the main traffic going into the airport parking lots. Choosing to take a car service instead of driving yourself will drastically reduce your commute time to and from the airport.
Check Online
There are a number of resources available online today for you to check before you head to the airport. The Laguardia Airport twitter feed is often a good source of information about the latest construction details. The Port Authority also issues alerts and advisories for traffic and weather delays. You can visit their sites or social media pages and get up to the minute details about how your commute looks. They will let you know of any unexpected delays that could keep you from making your flight on time.
While the new construction at LaGuardia will certainly make for a friendlier flying experience, it will be 2022 before the project is completed. That means that rerouting of traffic and temporary closures will continue for the next four to five years. Learning to deal with the traffic now will make the next few years easier to handle, starting with getting alerts on your phone and taking a car service to the front gates. Fortunately, city officials are watching the construction closely and have taken measures to improve traffic whenever a delay crops up.
